Achieve your Goals in Toastmasters
by Denise McConnell DTM District Director
As we step further into 2026, the initial “New Year” energy shifts from excitement to execution. For many of us, resolutions revolve around “leveling up” – whether that is a promotion at work, better social confidence, or finally mastering a specific skill. The secret to lasting change is intentional goal setting. Take time to acknowledge your progress, inspiring continued effort and a sense of accomplishment, making your goals feel more attainable.
The Art of the Goal
In Toastmasters, we don’t just give speeches; we follow a Path. To truly master public speaking and leadership, your goals must be specific and time bound. Don’t just say, “I want to be a better speaker,” set a specific goal to complete Level 3 of your Pathway by June. This change will transform a vague desire into a tangible milestone. By breaking down your long-term resolutions into small, actionable projects, you create a feedback loop of success that builds momentum in all areas of your life.
Elevate Your Resolution
Mastering the art of communication is the most versatile resolution you can make. Toastmasters offers a safe space to practice and grow, so you can confidently face real-world speaking challenges when they arrive, knowing you’re supported every step of the way.
District Spotlight: The Stage is Set!
Contest Season is here! This is one of the most exciting times of the Toastmasters year. District 25 is hosting the Humorous and International Speech Contests. If you’re new or unsure about presenting at the contest, support your fellow club members or volunteer behind the scenes. These roles provide valuable experience and help you build confidence for future contests. Whether you are competing or cheering from the sidelines, the energy of a contest is unmatched.
Bring a Friend: Three Easy Ways to Invite a Guest
Contests are the perfect open house opportunities. If you know someone looking to crush their own 2026 goals, here are three simple ways to invite them:
-
- The Social Sneak-Peek: Share the contest flyer on your LinkedIn or Instagram pages. Add a personal note like: “I’m attending this speech contest to see some of the best speakers in the region. It’s high-energy and super inspiring. Want to be my guest?”
- The Professional Pivot: Identify a colleague who wants to improve their leadership. Tell them: “I’ve found a great way to practice high-stakes communication. We have a speech contest coming up. Come see how the pros do it!”
- The Entertainment Angle: Since we are hosting the Humorous Contest, keep it light! “I’m going to a live comedy and speech event this week. It’s free, fun, and a great way to spend an hour. Want to join?”
Let’s make this season one of growth, laughter, and shared success. See you at the contest!
