The first weekend of February I had the pleasure of taking a road trip out to West Texas for the beginning of our district contest season. I spent 14 hours and 54 minutes in the car, driving 970 miles. I completed my round trip back to Fort Worth with my heart full after spending time with the GOATS of Division G. It also got me thinking about why our members should attend their respective Area and Division contests.
Attending a Toastmasters contest is an experience marked by excitement, camaraderie, and inspiration. As soon as you arrive at the venue, you’re greeted by friendly faces and a sense of anticipation. The atmosphere is lively because the participants, members, and guests all mingle, exchanging words of encouragement and sharing stories of their Toastmasters updates. The contest itself is thoughtfully organized, with volunteers ensuring everything runs smoothly and that contestants feel supported.
As the Contest Toastmaster declares, “Let the contest begin,” they set the tone and garner excitement for each of the upcoming contestants. Whether it’s the Humorous Speaking or International Speech Contest, the diversity of topics and speaking styles reflects the rich tapestry of our organization, where every member brings their unique perspective. As an audience member, I never tire of witnessing the contestants’ commitment to excellence through the quality of their presentations.
While the judges are deliberating, the audience is treated to an interview of the contestants where you learn more about your fellow Toastmasters in the district. Then announcements are made by district leadership to keep all of us informed. Now… if deliberations take longer than expected, we know there is no dead time in Toastmasters, so the audience is invited to participate in some fun table topics. Take it from me, it is better to volunteer than to be voluntold!
After the judges’ careful consideration, when the winners are announced, the room erupts in celebration. Certificates and trophies are awarded, and the contestants are congratulated for their efforts. While some may advance to the next level, everyone leaves with a sense of accomplishment and renewed motivation to continue their public speaking journey. The Toastmasters area contest is more than a competition – it is a community event that highlights the power of communication and personal development. Take advantage by attending one or more this season – and please tap me on the shoulder and say hello!!!
