by Karen Coleman DTM Youth Leadership Chair
Recently, I had the privilege of serving as a community judge at the Texas Escalade, a STOA Speech and Debate competition for homeschool students, and what an inspiring experience it was.
As someone deeply committed to youth leadership and communication development, I was honored to step into a role that allowed me to witness these skills in action. I served as a judge during Rounds 2 and 3, focusing on extemporaneous, impromptu, and prepared speeches. From the very first speaker, I knew I was experiencing something truly special.
These young communicators demonstrated remarkable poise, confidence, and clarity. In extemporaneous speaking, they tackled complex topics with thoughtful analysis under time pressure. During impromptu sessions, they quickly organized their thoughts and spoke authentically. Their prepared speeches reflected not only strong structure and delivery, but also purpose, passion, and conviction.
What stood out most was their willingness to grow. Each student approached the platform with courage, supported by hours of preparation and a desire to improve. As a judge, I embraced the opportunity to affirm their strengths while offering constructive and encouraging feedback. I was reminded that sometimes, a few intentional words of encouragement can ignite lasting confidence in a young leader.
This experience reaffirmed my belief that when young people are provided with the right tools and a safe space to express themselves, they can exceed expectations. After this two-day commitment, I came away with valuable insights that I can share with my fellow Toastmasters. “Emerging potential is what fosters growth and unlocks success, regardless of age.”
Call to Action: I encourage my fellow Toastmasters and communication leaders to volunteer as community judges for youth programs like Texas Escalade. Your presence and encouragement can significantly impact the next generation of confident speakers and leaders. This role is not just about giving feedback; it’s an investment in the future.
“Every great leader starts with the courage to speak.”
