by Candie Blunt Annual Conference Decorations Chair
When I was about seven years old, my family took a trip to Disneyworld. I was expecting a few rides like what you see at Six Flags. Instead, I found a playland full of whimsy and happiness at every turn. Walt Disney envisioned a world where your imagination was encouraged to run wild.
As an adult, I always take note of the spaces I’m in and ask myself if it reinforces what I am seeing or listening to. This is especially helpful when I am working on sets in community theatre. We create a world where all the things our actors say and do are believable. We want to transport you to another time and place, reinforcing the plot, and transport the audience to another time and place. If the set is good, you may not even notice it. Likewise, if it is not good, you start to notice all the holes and inconsistencies in the story being presented.
I love to bring this concept to my Toastmaster journey. I have had the privilege of being the Decorations Chair for the last few years. I love the opportunity to work with teams planning these events, dreaming of ideas and ways to make these events fun by creating a space that reinforces the themes. Every event is meticulously thought out to amplify your experience at every turn.
I have heard it said, “many hands make light work.” That is especially true in Toastmasters. We can dream all day long, but if we don’t have the volunteers, we are not able to pull off all our dreams for these events. The beauty of volunteering to help with décor is the ease of getting plugged in. Even if you do not feel especially creative yourself, we can still use you! As always, we break things down to manageable tasks (i.e. fill this jar with these rocks and place it on that table.) If you are looking for a way to get involved in one of our events, this is the perfect place to participate. It’s a fun way to see how the different roles work together to make each conference and summit special. Consider joining us at our upcoming annual conference, Superpowers for Success. I can’t wait to see you at the next big district event!
