Changes for Newsletter/Website Contests

To keep up with the times, District 25 revamped how we communicate with our members. We chose to phase out the traditional PDF-format newsletter in favor of regular emails with brief items and links to more information. Our clubs are making a similar transition; very few still publish a traditional newsletter in either electronic or print format. Instead they are using emails, blogs, social media, and websites to reach their members or anyone else interested in their clubs’ activities. Therefore, we are discontinuing the Club Newsletter Contest. However, the Club Website Contest will continue, and the rules for it have...

It Was the “Night of Dreams” for District 25

The Ashton Depot, before the event And a great time was had by all! District 25, we definitely GOT OUR PARTY ON! On Saturday, August 27th, 260+ Toastmasters and friends gathered for our annual Awards Banquet, at The Ashton Depot in downtown Fort Worth. Attendees were met at the door by our enthusiastic greeter, Ron Clark. Massive arrangements of white, blue and purple ostrich feathers rested on tables draped in deep purple. Our ushers made certain that everyone was seated at the proper places and the program began. Past District Governor and newly-elected Region III International Director David McCallister emceed...

D25 Shines at International Convention

Las Vegas was in all its glory for this year’s International Convention. Our highly anticipated new brand was unveiled: “Toastmasters International, Where Leaders Are Made!” The lights shined brightly on District 25 at this year’s Convention, and everyone that attended represented D25 in grand style. Our District was honored as a Distinguished District, Diana Patton for Excellence in Education & Training, and Bonne Stroman for Excellence in Marketing! Congratulations, Diana and Bonne, and thank you for all your tireless efforts on behalf of our members. It was wonderful to see our members parade across the stage with our Distinguished...

Fall Speech Contests: What’s in it for me?

Bonne Stroman District 25’s fall speech contest season opens Thursday, September 8th. Throughout this fall, you could attend a speech contest almost every Thursday, Friday or Saturday to see Toastmasters compete for the honor of advancing to the District Humorous Speech and Evaluations contests, held at our Fall Conference November 18-19.   According to the Toastmasters International Speech Contest Rulebook, “Speech contests are an important part of the Toastmasters educational program. They provide an opportunity for Toastmasters to gain speaking experience, as well as an opportunity for other Toastmasters to learn by observing proficient speakers.”   SO WHAT’S IN IT...

A Convention Evaluation

What happens in Vegas shouldn’t stay there, so here’s a first-timer’s report on the 80th Toastmasters International Convention — told in a traditional speech evaluation format: What I Saw Fellowship: The opening and closing ceremonies were spectacular; the pride and pageantry that accompanied the procession of flags was palpable; it emphasized the increasingly international flavor of Toastmasters. The friendly, helpful nature of Toastmasters everywhere was inescapable during the convention. In fact, it was difficult not to make new friends. Whether it’s small talk or shop talk, “table topics” with Toastmasters is fun and effortless. Rebranding: The new “look and feel”...

Invitation to a Book Signing

Harry Hall of Irving Toastmasters has written a book called Help!  Everyone is Staring at Me, which he will be signing on Saturday, Sept 17, from 3:30-5:30 pm at Crystal’s Pizza and Spaghetti, 930 W. Airport Fwy (Hwy 183), in Irving.     Public speaking is the number one fear in America (death is second). This book gives you tips on preparing for that big talk, insights on making a speech yours, and how to meet audience expectations. You go from a result of “I’m glad that’s over” to satisfaction for a job well done. If you can’t attend,...

Chuck’s Excellent Experience of Excellence!

Dana LaMon and Chuck Mencke I had the honor of attending my first Toastmasters International Convention August 18 – 21, 2011. The experience left me speechless, and that’s pretty tough for a Toastmaster. The convention was overwhelming and at the same time extremely fulfilling. It was tough to unwind at night and get to sleep because I had so much raging through my brain. I got to meet and interact with Toastmasters from all over the world and “rub elbows” with many of the former “World Champions of Speaking.” I also got to meet the board of directors and staff...

A Lifetime of Service Rewarded

At the 2011 International Convention in Las Vegas, Toastmasters International President Pat Johnson, DTM, presented a Presidential Citation to me saying “Celebrating nearly 60 years in Toastmasters, Rex has served the organization in countless noteworthy positions. He has given a lifetime of service to this organization and is one of the few remaining Toastmasters who have met and worked with our founder, Dr. Ralph Smedley.” I was deeply honored to receive this recognition and a standing ovation.  I am proud to be a member of North Texas Toastmasters Club here in D25 and look forward to many more years of...
