Achieving the Vision

It’s up to all of us to support the vision behind the Toastmasters International rebranding campaign and accompanying tagline: “Where Leaders are Made.” If you and your club want to get started, here are three ways to support rebranding:  Update your Website. As several D25 clubs have done already, just follow the instructions on how to implement FreeToastHost (FTH) Version 2.0. If your club uses a platform other than FTH, have your Webmaster visit TI’s virtual brand portal. If (s)he needs further help, contact me, Chuck Mencke, or Jodie Sanders. 2. Replace obsolete collateral. Start with your club’s guest packet,...

Sharing Your Light

“A candle loses nothing by sharing its light with another.” One of the most important ways we nourish our testimonies is by sharing them with others. Sharing our testimonies not only builds others but brings greater “light” and further blessings into our own lives. —Spencer W. Kimball Want to be inspired? Check out the stories that members of our District have told about their Toastmasters experience. Want to inspire others? Tell your Toastmaster story. Denni Cravins and Jodie Sanders have taken stories submitted by our members and presented them in a format that can be used at a special club...

Did You Know You’re Missing Out?

Judges work hard . . . As I was sitting at the Area 33 Contest tonight getting ready to judge, I was thinking to myself how much fun all of you were missing! There’s a core group of judges that have been judging a lot together lately. Why? Because there just aren’t enough judges available to cover the area and division contests.       . . . but they don’t go hungry. Judging and attending all the different area and division contests is so much fun. I look forward to each and every contest that I’m able to...

Pay It Forward

Cindy Hinckley, DTM Savvy Sayers Fort Worth, Texas Toastmasters enhanced my communication skills by teaching me how to organize my thoughts on a moment’s notice, think on my feet, and have confidence in myself to get my point across to others effectively. Door opener: It has opened doors for me at work. I have gotten opportunities I would never have had. Also, I would never have believed in myself enough to take on certain work roles without Toastmasters. “I feel a whole new world opened up for me when I stepped outside my local club and competed in my first...

A Proud Moment

Diana Patton, DTM Southlake Toastmasters Southlake, Texas My best friend asked me to speak at her mother’s funeral. That day, I knew why I joined Toastmasters. I was proudly able to say, “Yes, I would be honored to speak.” At each and every Toastmasters meeting that I attend, I’m inspired, encouraged, and/or entertained by the members and their stories. Amazing audience: It is an incredible organization with amazing people. “When I look at my first officer role at the BNSF Toastmasters club and where I am now as District Governor, I’m truly amazed at how much I’ve developed as a...

Know When to Take Charge

Karen Hagar, ACS, CL Fighter Enterprise Toastmasters Fort Worth, Texas People like to talk. I like to listen. Toastmasters is a safe and comfortable learning environment. My top-of-the-list benefit is the opportunity to meet people. Golden opportunity: Toastmasters is a family that exists because of the same interests of speaking in front of people, desire for professional growth, and stepping out of our comfort zone. “I am better equipped to know when to take charge of a situation that needs communication or a resolution. Knowing when to taking charge can save a meeting or a life.”       By...

A Virtually Seamless Collaboration

On Monday, September 19, 2011, we had possibly a world-first in the history of Toastmasters — for sure, a first for all clubs involved. A joint meeting of three Toastmasters clubs using a video conferencing systems facility with members located in Irving, Texas (Connection Communicators Toastmasters), Atlanta, Georgia (Nokia Siemens Networks SpeechMasters ), and Redmond, Washington (Create WOW! Toastmasters). We all joined up in specifically-designed sound and video studios that provide real-time, eye-to-eye conferencing with outstanding audio and no perceived delay. Halo studios are connected by a dedicated network that enables any Halo studio to connect to any other Halo...

From Pen to Presentation

Julie Cosgrove, ATMB, CL Top Notch Toastmasters Fort Worth, Texas Years ago, as a budding author, I learned that being able to promote my writing is as important as my writing. At a writer’s conference, another writer I barely knew invited me to Toastmasters and told me how much it had helped her speaking in public and also on-the-fly with agents and editors. Prose to Pro: The next week, I experienced the professional warmth of Toastmasters. Now, three books later, I speak to women’s groups at least once a month all over Texas. “I’m no Beth Moore or Joyce Meyer—yet!...

Global Leadership, Global Impact

Maurice Taitt, DTM Thumbs Up Toastmasters Irving, Texas The Speech Evaluation process was instrumental in honing my speaking skills. Table Topics helped immensely in presenting hotel development projects to cities across the U.S.A. I needed to be prepared to answer questions of which I had no advance knowledge. Living, learning and leadership: I learned a lot from leaders who preceded me. I also learned how to encourage and motivate others to find their truest selves by looking deep within for hidden talents and abilities. “I am a citizen of three nations and the Toastmasters International convention is the only place...
