A Plan for Retaining Members

Part three of a three-part series:  Putting First Things First: Formulating & Applying a Member Retention Strategy Read parts one and two. Leverage What Toastmasters Offers The Toastmasters program offers built-in ways to help clubs address member retention. Here are three general suggestions that fall in the heading of club best practices: 1) Provide mentoring: For new members, especially, but even for experienced members, it’s essential that clubs provide mentors who can share insights and experiences that help members achieve their goals. The most successful clubs are those that do this consistently, methodically and well. 2) Provide rewards and recognition: Recognize member involvement, both active and passive,...

How to Build an Effective Home Page on Your FreeToastHost 2.0 Website

Some things should be out in plain sight so your website users don’t have to hunt for them! Make sure your meeting time and place are prominently displayed near the top of the home page. Don’t bury it on another page. FreeToastHost does provide a default page called “Meeting Information/Directions,” but you can use this for more detailed directions and a map. This has just the right kind and amount of information. A “Goldilocks” home page! (Click on graphic to enlarge.) The same can be said for contact information. Go ahead and use the default “Contact Us” page, but put something on the...

The Challenge of Retaining Members

Part two of a three-part series:  Putting First Things First: Formulating & Applying a Member Retention Strategy Read part one. Conduct Research There will always be ‘natural’ reasons why members leave — with corporate layoffs or closures, relocations, or major life changes being three obvious examples. But are there other reasons why your club loses members that you could retain? Member exit research can start to tell you why. An exit survey is easy to construct, and if you need help with that, please contact District Governor Diana Patton. Once you know why members leave, you can work toward fixing problems. Conducting...

Pitfalls to Watch For in Setting Up a FreeToastHost 2.0 Website

Getting ready to request your new FTH 2.0 site? Here are some common problems to avoid. 1. Not being able to get authorization to receive a new FTH site. Go to the Toastmasters International Find a Club page. Do a club number search to see your club’s meeting and contact information. On the “Click here to email club” link, make sure that is the correct email address of a current club officer, or a valid contact person. If it is wrong, a club officer needs to log in to Club Central and change it. When you mouse over the email link, the address...

Aim High; Never Give Up

Gary Lee Webb, DTM Waco Wordsmiths Waco, Texas Toastmasters has taught me that I am capable of far more than I ever dreamed. It took me 15 months to do my first 10 speeches. This year, I expect to complete 27 speeches by Christmas. Now, I speak on average more than once per week. Five years ago, I would not have even considered being a leader. At best, I was a good follower. Now, I know I can step into leadership roles and excel. Past success helps me know I can do it again and again. Simple, successful equation: Toastmasters =...

Encouraging Encounters

Mittie Blackburn, ACS, ALB Clearly Speaking Toastmasters Abilene, Texas Toastmasters helped me become a much better encourager. Now, I motivate by encouragement rather than criticism. I still point out areas for improvement, but sandwiched between praise (like evaluations). I attended the Spring 2011 Conference after accepting a leadership role. There, I went to a presentation about changing your mindset. I purchased the book offered. “Aha” moment: Now, this book is prompting me to change my entire life. What a benefit! “I am much better at thinking before I speak, and planning what to say in an effective and meaningful way.”  ...

Motorcycle Club Motivation

Larry Harmon, CC, ALB Connection Communicators Irving, Texas I joined Toastmasters not long after I became the president of my motorcycle club. Leadership skills were lacking, especially in getting my point across and organizing my thoughts. Once, several members left before the meeting was over. My manager recommended Toastmasters. After joining Toastmasters, my motorcycle club meetings were much smoother and on time. Driving excellence: Setting the example lets those following you know that you would not expect them to do anything that you would not be willing to do. “Competing in the speech contests has given me lots of joy. I...
