Imagine for a second you are planning to and on your way driving to compete in a Table Topics Area Contest. You are already anxious as you know your club members are counting on you. On your way to the event and before the contest started however you witness a lady who you do not know stuck on the side of the road struggling with a flat tire. Now we all know that in today’s world and especially post-COVID the world could use a little more hope and a lot more kindness. So, what’s that have to do with our speech contest?
Insert our Outstanding Member of the month who decided to tell everyone he was going to waive his briefing and try and go help this lady. He then proceeded to help her get a new tire and used all his communication skills to help call a tow truck because when he looked, he noticed the spare the lady had was apparently 5 lug nuts, but her wheel only had space for 4. Could this get any worse for the lady well unfortunately due to the issue with the spare the tow truck driver was unable to help but did this stop this member? Of course not, he proceeded to run up the street and get a proper cost-effective tire and came back to help change the tire now. Lastly and as if this was all not enough this member then used his communication skills to share with the lady how she needed to have a proper spare and explained what she needed to do.
Now back to the contest … by the time our member had done the super good deed and restored all our faith in humanity but unfortunately, he did end up missing competing in the contest. The selfless act and true service to just help somebody with no expectation of reward or otherwise is why this month we recognize Stephen Keith from Cowtown Toastmasters as the March Outstanding Member. Thank you, Stephen, for being a true example of all that is good and right and how doing the right thing and helping people is the best thing we can do all day.
