Spencer and I met in Spring 2012 when he visited Skymasters Toastmasters. Spencer brought a large personality to the club like he did in all social situations. He immediately began working the projects in the manuals, as the teacher he was. He became our club President and shared his New York experiences. When contest season began that year, he did not hesitate to compete in the Tall Tales Speech Contest. As he continued his journey, he worked the advanced manuals and the Competent Leadership manual. When Pathways became our curriculum, he continued to participate but his interest waned. Spencer reflected many of our members who did not want to engage our online curriculum. He completed Level 1 but I could not get him to complete Level 2.
Spencer also joined Off-the-Cuff with his boisterous, energetic, New York personality. The speeches fit his style and imagination perfectly. He never had a problem achieving 5 minutes for any of his speeches and many were Tall Tales in themselves.
Spencer and I became close friends. His favorite thing to discuss was comic books we read growing up – DC or Marvel didn’t matter. He was a movie buff as well who liked action flicks on IMAX; he did not go to the theatre unless the movie was on IMAX. He loved to debate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially how the storylines developed, and who was the best superhero.
