by Shuhdi Hashim Division F Director
It has been a wonderful opportunity to serve as a Division Director this Toastmaster year. It made me realize, even more, how beautiful of a district we have here in D25. I cannot express my awe, admiration, and wonder about the camaraderie that is in the air across the district.
When I was approached to serve as Division Director, I initially declined indicating that I was just wrapping up a wonderful year as an Area Director and have already gained a tremendous set of skill sets performing that role. The person on the other end of the line, being a Toastmaster, did not budge. She indicated that the role of a Division Director allows one to gain a different set of skill sets than that of an Area Director. An Area Director directly deals with the clubs, visiting and supporting them throughout the year, whereas the Division Director supports the Area Directors in their quest. Coming out of a fresh AD experience makes me a great candidate to share that with an incoming group of Area Directors, the Toastmaster on the phone indicated. I was sold.
Being a Division Director exercises a different set of muscles than those of an Area Director. The team is composed of Toastmasters that possess varying skill sets. The job of the Division Director is to provide support wherever it’s needed to ensure that the team goals are met.
Looking back, I cherish the tough moments, those were the real growth moments for everyone on the team. When the road gets rough, people glow. When the times got tough, the team huddled together and delivered. I really appreciate the great team spirit during the season’s tough times.
From the Summer TLI sessions to the Fall club visit reports and renewal season, through Winter TLI and contest season, and into Spring renewals and club visit reports, the year was packed with numerous district events, including The Summit, monthly division meetings, quarterly DEC meetings, and culminating with the D25 conference. These experiences provided countless opportunities to build lasting friendships and networking bonds, surpassing those found in any other personal or professional setting.
I testify to the tremendous growth that I have witnessed in my team, me included. The challenges that were encountered were great growth opportunities within the framework of a loving and supporting district. It’s quite an honor to serve in this amazing district. Visiting the clubs, one is able to witness the spirit of commitment and dedication to each member’s growth. I look forward to serving the district in other capacities whenever the opportunity presents itself.
