Ah, February! The month of love! Whether we bought someone a gift, shared a sweet sentiment, exchanged hugs, or simply shot someone a smile, we were reminded to express our love, or gratitude, for someone this month. That someone could have been a friend or family member. Perhaps they were members of a Toastmasters club. What I’m here to remind you is that, although Valentine’s Day has passed, we should always show love for and take care of ourselves. It can be hard. After all, we are Toastmasters. We love to help others, sometimes before we help ourselves.
When we focus on ourselves, including our goals, development, and growth, we are also helping to inspire others with similar interests. We are leaders and leading by example is a powerful way to help both others and ourselves. You may not always realize it, but others are watching you. No, not in a creepy way; in an inspirational way. People are encouraged, motivated, and inspired by the things we do, how we do them, and what we’ve achieved as Toastmasters.
When I joined Toastmasters in March 2021, I had no idea what I was getting into. One of my reasons for joining was the potential for leadership opportunities. Boy, did I hit the jackpot! There were so many options for me to serve in leadership roles and I wanted them all! Before the end of the year, I felt burned out, overwhelmed, and frustrated with all that I had taken on. I was like a kid in a candy store that ate too much candy. I realized I was not taking care of myself. This also meant that I was not in a mental or physical place to serve others. Upon learning this lesson, I could refresh, refuel, and recharge. I’ve learned that it’s okay to eat the candy (the many Toastmasters opportunities), but in moderation.
We cannot be the best we can be for others if we are not the best we can be for ourselves.
