It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Past District 25 Governor John Fooks, DTM. He died on September 20, 2018, at the age of 75. He served from 1990-1991 before District 50 was created. His theme was “Hitch Your Wagon to a Star”. During his year’s service, the District was recognized as Select Distinguished.
David Himmelstein, Past District 25 Governor (2005-2006):
John Fooks was thoughtful, kind, whip-smart, and wise. He helped lay the foundation for the success District 25 enjoys today and will continue to enjoy in the future. He will be greatly missed.
Susan Gardner, Past District 50 Governor:
John was such a true gift to our organization. He was a talented mentor, leader, and dearly loved Toastmasters. I remember when I was elected District Governor in 2010 and went to a contest in Eastern Division, he pulled my dad aside and told him how proud he was of me that I was the District Governor and how he was looking forward to a great year. With John’s help, we had the great year he spoke of by being Distinguished. John was everyone’s friend, whether he knew you for years or just met you that day it didn’t matter. He was a servant leader that set the bar high for everyone and everyone worked hard to live up to his expectations. Because John lived in Texarkana when he was a trio member and drove hundreds of miles to serve the members, he never wanted to hear anything from anyone about being a leader and having to travel. I kept that feeling close to me as I met leaders from around the globe who had to travel incredible distances to visit their clubs. Toastmasters International is a better organization because John Fook’s was a part of it and I am a better leader because John played a part in my Toastmasters journey. Farewell, dear friend!
Sonia Wynn Dawson, Past District 50 Governor:
We lost a wonderful leader and mentor to many. John was a past District Governor of 25 before the split into District 50. He remained an active member of district 50 and mentored many. His leadership and sense of humor will be missed by all.
